A depleted Cook County High School girls’ team traveled to Two Harbors on February 22 to face the Agates and after leading 19-18 at the half, ended up losing by 7 points, 45-38.
The Vikings played without two starters, Breana Peterson and Lily Gruber-Schulz. Both are out with ankle injuries, although Breana is expected to recover in time for the playoffs.
Sweet-shooting Theresa Morrin once again led her teammates in scoring with 18 points. Morrin has been a model of consistency on both offense and defense in the wake of her fellow starters going out with injuries.
Leah Utities and Kaitlynn Linnell each had 8 points and Jamie Sjogren netted 4 points to end the Vikings’ scoring for the night.
“We got a little bit tired in the game against Two Harbors,” said Head Coach Todd Toulouse.
“We aren’t very deep and because of the lack of depth the girls that are subs really are inexperienced.
“At the end of this season more and more younger girls have seen playing time and that will be a plus in the future. I was very pleased with our effort, enthusiasm, and execution even when we were tired,” Toulouse said.
Briana Stuberud led Two Harbors with 13 points.
The Vikings ended their regular season 10-14 and 6-7 in the conference. They finished 8th out of 11th teams in the Polar League and faced 4th seed Floodwood on Thursday, February 28 in Hermantown. The Vikings came into that game seeded 5th. Highlights of what should be a close contest will be in next week’s paper.
