Playing their third game in as many days, the Viking girls’ softball team traveled to Floodwood on Thursday, May 12 and faced the Polar Bears.

Kristina Rude pitched six strong innings for the Vikings, not allowing any runs the first three innings.

Floodwood went on a tear in the fourth inning, however, scoring 6 runs while keeping the Vikings scoreless. Rude and the Vikings’ defense shut their opponents down the rest of the way, but the Vikings were unable to generate any runs.

All told the Vikings collected four hits for the game. Those getting hits, all singles, included Theresa Morrin, Brea Boomer, Sarissa Falk, and Signe Larson.

So far after 12 games the Vikings’ record is 3 wins and 9 losses. Anna Carmen leads the team with a .435 batting average, good for 18th place in the conference. Not far behind is Cecilia Schnobrich with a .423 batting average.

Brea Boomer ranks third in conference play with 6 steals.

Vikings win 11-2

May 17 was a fine day for softball, and the Cook County girls took advantage of one of the warmest days of spring by hosting the Albrook Falcons.

And like any good hosts, they were kind and respectful to their opponents but that didn’t take away from their competitive nature.

The strong pitching and hitting of Kristina Rude led the Vikings. Rude gave up one run in the first inning and one run in the sixth inning, striking out 6 batters. The Vikings scored 4 runs in the first inning and 6 runs in the fourth inning. They also tacked on one run in the second inning, tallying 11 runs for the game.

Rude was 2-2 at the plate, while Brea Boomer went 2-3. Six other Vikings each got one hit, they were Cecilia Schnobrich, Anna Carman, Rachel Wieben, Megan Lehto, Lexie Palmer and Sarah Deshampe.

“We didn’t know what to expect in the game. Due to some injuries and other circumstances we were missing some of our varsity players. We had to start four junior varsity players in their place and they all came through. They all contributed and did a really good job and each of them had a base hit,” said head coach Jessie Anderson.

“It was pretty uplifting. Overall the defense played pretty well and our pitching was really good. A lot of balls went back to Rudie (Kristin Rude) so she took care of them and that spared our young infielders. Overall, it was a real solid game for us,” said Anderson.

The Vikings last game of the regular season is on Saturday, May 21, at home against Ely at 11 a.m. Next week the Vikings start the play-offs. None of the seeding has been picked yet, so the Vikings won’t know whom they face until the weekend of softball ends.
