Vikings lose to Ely Timberwolves

Special teams play is big for every team, and the Vikings have a very good kicker in Andrew Miller. The Vikings also tend to cover kick-offs very well. Flanked to Miller’s right on this kick-off is Colton Furlong with Adam Dorr on the outside. One of Miller’s greatest strengths is his ability to make great onside kicks.

The Cook County High School Vikings traveled to Ely on Friday, September 23 to play the 3-0 Ely Timberwolves and came away with a 26-6 loss.

With the defeat, Cook County drops to 1-3 for the season and Ely’s mark is now 4-0.

Head Coach Mitch Dorr said his team put up a good fight against the undefeated Timberwolves.

“We played hard against a tough Ely team. We were down 18-0 at the half and ended up losing 26-6,” Coach Dorr said.

“We played hard, but we didn’t do a lot of the little things it takes to win. Ethan Sporn continues to play great on defense and I really thought that sophomore Ben Trepanier played his best game of his young career. He played tremendous on the defensive line.

“Offensively we were in the Red Zone four times and only got one score, so we must focus on our Red Zone offense,” said Coach Dorr.

Quarterback Josh Prom rushed for 125 yards on 18 carries and completed seven of 24 passes for 42 yards, one for a seven-yard touchdown to Ethan Sporn.

Whenever a player is hurt and play is stopped the Vikings take a knee and wait for the injured player to be taken off of the field. No one likes to see a teammate or an opposing player hurt on the field of play. It is also the only time during a game that players all remove their helmets and cool off.

O’Phelan has carried 33 times for 148 yards, averaging 4.5 yards per carry and caught nine balls for 79 yards. Jack Haussner has five catches for 92 yards, Connor Somnis two catches for 80 yards and one game-winning touchdown, Andrew Miller three catches for 27 yards and Dyami Blackwell two catches for 22 yards.

This Friday, September 30, they face the 4-0 Mountain Iron-Buhl (MIB) Rangers at Lyle Anderson field for the Homecoming game. MIB defeated Onamia 78 – 8 last week, so the Rangers come into the game with lots of offensive firepower.

Come out to cheer on your Vikings!
