Deer River’s Brodie Peck must have thought it was Christmas last Friday night the way the Vikings were handing him the football. Peck, a defensive tackle, recovered four of the Vikings’ six fumbles as the Warriors routed CCHS 49-7 at Deer River in a game played September 19. The Vikings also gave up the ball on an interception to give them 7 turnovers on the night.

After gaining five first downs on the Vikings’ first offensive series, it looked like it was going to be a good game. But the Vikings turned the ball over on downs and Deer River marched the length of the field to score a touchdown to lead 7-0 after the first quarter ended.

Two fumbled kickoffs by the Vikings gave the Warriors the ball deep in Viking territory and gave the Vikings’ defense little chance. Deer River took full advantage of Vikings’ miscues to score three times in the second quarter to go into the locker room up 28-0. Deer River started its scoring barrage with a 5-yard run by junior quarterback Aaron Drotts. That was followed by a 28-yard TD run by Colton Hines.

After a quick Viking turnover Deer River scored again on a 40-yard pass from Drotts to wide receiver Ben Eby. Drotts managed one more short touchdown run to end the first half scoring. All of Ben Eby’s extra point kicks were good following the Warriors’ touchdowns.

The Vikings kicked off to Hines in the second half and he took it to the Warrior 37-yard line. Behind the running of Drotts and Hines it only took a couple of plays to get to the Vikings’ one-yard line where Drotts ran in for his third touchdown. The Vikings got the ball back on the kickoff and were quickly stopped, kicking it back to Deer River who marched in to score on a 9-yard run from Seth Fairbanks.

Richie Furlong scored the Vikings’ lone touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 60-yard run. Jamie Wick’s extra point was good. Deer River added one more touchdown of its own on a 5-yard touchdown run by Andrew Wakonabo.

When the Vikings could hold onto the ball they ran effectively, averaging 7 yards per carry. A couple of long (potential) touchdown passes were also dropped. It was that kind of night for the Vikings.

After the game Head Coach Mitch Dorr said, “Deer River didn’t do anything we didn’t plan for. The story of the game was our failure to execute and take care of the football. We definitely have the talent to compete with Deer River. The wheels fell off the bus so to speak in the second quarter and we couldn’t recover.

“We need to regroup and keep on fighting. Life is full of adversity and right now we are in the middle of it.”

The Vikings play winless Ogilvie at home on Friday, September 26. This game pits two teams with 27 players on their rosters. Against Deer River the Vikings faced a school with 54 athletes on its team.
