One of the Vikings’ new pitchers this year is Abby Prom. Abby, a junior, pitched against the Silver Bay Mariners and performed well on the mound. Ella Sporn is in the background playing second base.
The ball was jumping off of the bat of coach Luken as he hit long fly balls to his outfielders this past Wednesday. Good catches and good throws were made to the infield as the kids hustled in the field, a diamond covered with snow two days before, joking with each other and playing baseball the way it is meant to be played–with a lot of joy.
Wins aren’t everything, and the Vikings lost their second game of a young season last Thursday, but with continued practice outside, the team will improve its play.
The CCHS girls’ fast pitch softball team traveled to Carlton April 13 to face a talented, tough Carlton Bulldog team.
“We didn’t do a lot on offense,” said head coach Peter Luken. “And we made four or five errors.”
The Vikings lost 18-0. The game was called after four innings because of a new rule that stipulates that if a team is down 15 runs after four innings, the game is over.
A bright spot for the Vikings was Emma Smith at pitcher.
Showing good form, junior Hanna Borson waits for a pitch. Hanna is a strong outfielder for the Vikings.
“Emma pitched well, but when we needed to make plays for her, we didn’t always make them. And Carlton can hit,” Luken said. “They have some excellent hitters,” noted coach Luken.
The Vikings’ game against Floodwood that was to be played last Friday was canceled due to inclement weather. Next up is a slew of away games as the Vikings travel to play North Woods, Esko, Moose Lake, and Cromwell, before they play at home against Barnum on May 2 at 4 p.m.
Coach Luken said he is happy to be working with this group of kids. “They have good attitudes and like to play ball.”
