Cromwell’s deep bench and good shooters were too much for the Cook County Vikings who traveled to play the Cardinals on Friday, January 30.
“Cromwell plays nine kids, all who can shoot and score,” said Head Coach Mitch Dorr. “They full court pressed us the entire game and their talent was too much for us to handle,” Dorr said, whose team finished with a loss of 80-39.
The Vikings had 27 turnovers for the game and gave up 13 offensive rebounds. When they did have an open shot they made 40 percent of them, hitting 15 of 35 from the field.
Coach Dorr said, “Hannah Toftey came off the bench and gave us some quality minutes.”
Lily Gruber-Schulz 14, Emily Jacobsen 11, Sophie Eliasen 8, Jami Sjogren 4, and Sarah Toftey 2, scored for the Vikings.
Andrea Hakamaki, 18, and Bailey Gronner 17, led the Cromwell Cardinals.
Vikings wrench win from Wrenshall Wrens
Long bus rides always seem shorter on the way home after a win. That was the case for the Vikings who made the three-hour road trip to Wrenshall to face the Wrens in a hard fought game on Tuesday, February 3.
The Vikings won 53-46, but had to fight to hold off the Wrens who were coming back strong at the end of the game.
Lily Gruber-Schulz led the Vikings with 19 points, Emily Jacobsen netted 13, Sophie Eliasen 8, Sarah Toftey 7, Essance Haines 4, and Jami Sjogren scored 2 to end the Vikings’ scoring.
Sarah Toftey hit two 3-point baskets and Essance Haines made one 3-point basket in the contest.
While the Vikings rebounded well and played hard on defense, turnovers were a problem for the team. As one parent said, “We played ugly but we won.”
The Vikings are currently seeded 5th in the conference.
Upcoming games include playing Esko at home this Friday at 6:30 p.m. On February 10 they play Cromwell at home at 4:45 p.m. and then on February 13 they travel to play Moose Lake Willow River.
