The Cook County softball season came to an end this past week when the Vikings lost to the Carlton Bulldogs, 22-3 in the first round of the Section 7A playoffs. Preceding the playoff game in Carlton, Cook County lost its regular season game in Albrook, 8-2. The Vikings finish the season with a 3-12 overall record.
On Tuesday, May 18, the Vikings traveled to take on the Albrook Falcons. Junior Brea Boomer led off the game by drawing a walk. She stole second base and advanced to third on a Carly Puch bunt single. Boomer scored on a Chelsey Sorenson groundout and the Vikings had an early 1-0 lead.
The Falcons scored six runs in the next two innings, however, as Cook County committed three crucial fielding errors. The Vikings were unable to score in the second or third inning as the Falcons took a 6-1 lead.
Following a scoreless fourth inning, the Vikings led off the top of the fifth with an Anna Carman single. Carman eventually scored, giving the Vikings another run to cut the Falcon lead to four, 6-2.
Albrook added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth and the Vikings couldn’t answer in the final innings as the Falcons went on to win 8-2 in seven innings of play. Carman and freshman CeCe Schnobrich led the Vikings with two hits each.
One week later, on Tuesday, May 25, the Vikings traveled to Carlton for the first round of the Section 7A playoffs. The Bulldogs entered the game with an 8-6 record, having beaten the Vikings 14-1 in the season’s earlier match-up.
The Bulldogs wasted no time this time around, as they scored nine runs in the first two innings while only allowing one hit to the Vikings in the same time span.
Trailing 9-0, the Vikings’ Brea Boomer scored in the top of the third inning to give some life to the young Viking squad. The Bulldogs answered decisively, however, scoring 13 runs in the bottom of the third inning. Carlton would send 19 batters to the plate that would account for eight hits and six walks, not to mention the 13 runs.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Vikings scored two runs when Boomer and Puch scored. Cook County’s season came to an end with a 22-3 loss to Carlton. TheVikings finished the season with a 3-12 record and now look forward to starting their summer league season and building for next year.
The Vikings will miss their three seniors in Carly Puch, Sammy Jacobsen, and Taryn Logan. Their teammates and coaches wish them the best in the future.
