Vikings lose to Barnum 55-42

Cook County High School Sophomore guard Kale Boomer had a breakout game against a very good Barnum team in Barnum last Friday night, but it wasn’t enough to beat back the 18-5 Bombers.

“Kale played his best game of the year and is playing how I envision him to be from this point forward. He plays without fear and we need more of that kind of play,” said Head Coach

Mitch Dorr.

The Vikings kept the game close for the first half, trailing 25-18 at the half. The score was even with less than two minutes to play, but Barnum went on a 7-0 run. “That really hurt us for the remainder of the game because it put us in a tough hole against a very good team on the road,” said Dorr.

Another factor that hurt the Vikings was Junior forward Dylan Quaife wasn’t healthy.

“Dylan was sick and that limited him to only 15 minutes of play,” Dorr said.

Without Quaife’s rebounding and point scoring, the kids had to play perfectly to beat a tough opponent on their home floor. And on this night, they weren’t quite up to that task.

One of the bright spots for the team was the way they handled the ball. “We only had 7 turnovers as a team which was great, but our shooting was not there and our lack of rebounding really hurt us,” noted Dorr.

Boomer led the Vikings in scoring with 15 points. Junior guard David Bergstrom followed with 13, while Ryan Martinson finished with 8 points and Quaife scored 3 points, well below his usual average.

Josh Hogan led Barnum corers with 13 points.

“I thought Will Petty played well off the bench. We played hard and I was proud of our effort. It wasn’t a bad game, but not great game, either,” said Dorr. Boys win last regular season game

The boys’ team finished its regular season with a win at home against a young Two Harbors team. Neither team shot well, and the 42-22 final score reflected that.

The last time the teams played, the Vikings won by 7 points and the game was at Two Harbors.

But on this crisp March 1st evening, the Vikings got off to a quick start and Two Harbors never had the firepower to catch up. The score at halftime was 30-9, and it seemed the Vikings were going to run away with the game.

But there was a lid on each basket. And the lid stayed for each team the entire second half.

Fans saw lots of short-range shots go up the second half, but after 15 minutes of play, each team had made three baskets, and the score was 36-15.

Still, the Vikings played solid defense and passed the ball well enough to find the open man. And the open man was usually right underneath the hoop for an easy shot. But on this night two feet seemed like shooting from the moon. If a miss is still called a “brick” then there were enough bricks to build a small pyramid.

One Viking that could find the hoop was Dylan Quaife. Dylan scored 10 points on the night. Colin Everson hit for 8, David Bergstrom scored 7, Will Petty hit for 6, Ryan Martinson tossed in 4 and Johnny Jacobsen added 2 points to complete the Vikings scoring. Jake Iskat led Two Harbors with 6 points.

The Vikings ended their season with an 11-9 overall record and finished 6-6 in conference play. Now it’s off to the play-offs. Go Vikings!
