A game that was close at halftime 28-20, got completely away from the Vikings as they lost 71-34 to Barnum on Friday, February 3.

The Vikings led once in the game, 7-5, but Barnum scored 11 straight points to go up 16-7. From that point the Vikings tried to play catch-up, but with few kids on the bench, the team ran out of energy.

Barnum scored the majority of its points on lay-ups, working the ball around the perimeter until finding an open man underneath who scored easily. Meanwhile, the Vikings passed the ball on the perimeter, but rarely found anyone on the inside open to pass to. For its part, Barnum stopped defending the Viking guards on the outside, allowing them to play catch- which they did a lot- and collapsed its defense on the inside.

Once again senior Sam O’Phelan led the team in scoring with 14 points. Will Ramberg tallied 10 points and Dyami Blackwell netted 7.

“We just did not play well against Barnum,” said head Coach Mitch Dorr. “We had an okay first half, but in the second half we just could not execute on offense. We need to find some guys who want to score and are looking to make plays. Against Barnum, we played not to make mistakes, instead of going out and attacking the defense.”

The Vikings’ game against Lakeview that was scheduled to be played on Tuesday, February 7 was cancelled due to the weather. It will not be rescheduled.

The Vikings face a tall order this Friday night (Feb. 10) when Esko comes to town. Adam Trapp is listed at 7 feet 2 inches but rumor has it he has grown another two inches. Whatever, he is listed as America’s tallest high school boy basketball player and he is only a junior. The game starts 5 p.m.
