What a difference a week makes.
Last week the Vikings’ baseball team won three games in a row, and then over a span of six days, lost three in a row. With a young line-up, the Vikings overall play good defense and have some fine young pitchers, but the team has trouble scoring runs. Over the last three games, only three Vikings crossed the plate, one in each game.
Meanwhile the (main) Viking hurlers include the following sophomores: Andrew Miller, Ethan Sporn, Tristen Bockovich, and Dillon Sjogren. Head Coach Arleigh Jorgenson will often use three pitchers in a game, especially in cold weather to save the kids’ arms. When any one of the kids isn’t pitching, they are playing another position on the field.
Playing three games in six days is hard for professional baseball teams, and even harder for a small school like the CCHS boys’ baseball team. But play they did, first against South Ridge on Thursday, May 4 at South Ridge, falling 4-1 and then on Saturday, May 6 the boys squared off at home against the Ely Timberwolves and lost 11-1.
Two Harbors came to town on Tuesday, May 9 to face the CCHS Vikings in a match of North Shore rivals.
Cook County fell behind 1-0 in the first inning and the score stayed that way until the fourth inning. The Agates put two more points on the board in the fourth and the Vikings scored one run or their own in that inning.
In the fifth inning the Agates added one more run and that’s the way the score stayed through seven innings. The Vikings fell 4-1.
Esko currently leads the Polar League Conference with a 5-0 record. The Vikings sit in sixth place with a 2-4 conference mark out of 11 teams.
On Thursday, May 11, the boys played McGregor/Cromwell at home after the paper was put to bed. They traveled to Two Harbors on Friday, May 12 to play a rubber match against Two Harbors, then get a long break between games, facing Mesabi East on May 19 at Mesabi.
