Vikings lose heartbreaker to Northeast Range



Up 5-1 after four innings of play, the Vikings seemed in control of the Section 7A playoff game against Northeast Range Nighthawks, but a late rally by Northeast was just enough to give them the victory.

On Tuesday, May 31, the game was held in Cohassett at Portage Park.

Both teams scored one run in the first. Northeast scored when Micio Maki singled on a 1-1 count to drive in a run. Mico was 3-4 on the day.

In the bottom of the first following a strikeout by Amos Falter, Paul Dorr doubled. Hunter Gomez struck out swinging by Elliot Levens, who was on the mound for the Rangers and the Vikings had two outs. That brought up Jacob Dorr. Jacob singled and drove in his brother Paul for the tying run. Kole Anderson drew a walk in his at bat, and Jacob ended up on third following an error by the first baseman. However, the Viking rally ended when Kole was caught stealing second, which was the third out.

The Vikings’ offense came to life in the third inning. Up first, Paul Dorr drew a walk. Then, Hunter Gomez struck out swinging, which allowed Paul to steal second. Next, Jacob Dorr hit a ball to the left fielder, who committed an error, which allowed Paul to score. Then, Kole Anderson hit a sharp grounder to third which was misplayed, and he reached first on an error.

Meanwhile, Paul reached third base with one gone. Cade Smith hit a line drive to center field, which scored Jacob Dorr. Hunter Rex, in to run for Anderson, reached second. Benali Myers hit into a fielder’s choice to the third baseman. Hunter Rex was out at third while Smith advanced to second.

Next, Cy Oberholtzer hit a line drive single to the left fielder, which scored Smith and Myers. The inning ended with a J Shannon strike out, but the Vikings pushed four runs across the plate against a good pitcher.

Northeast’s big inning started out meekly.

In the top of the fifth, Zach Poderzy lined out to Viking shortstop Paul Dorr. Jacob Dorr struck out Ashton Solberg for two outs, and then the Rangers began scoring.

The barrage of runs began when Wyatt Gorsman singled. Jackson Levens followed with a single, and then Elliot Levens lined a single to center field, which scored Gorsman and Jackson Levens.

That brought up hot hitting Mico Maki who blasted a home run over the left field wall and all of a sudden; the game was tied 5-5.

Next, Landon Houghton walked. Zander Lislegard hit a fly ball to right field that was misplayed, and Houghton advanced to third. Jacob Mackai walked, which loaded the bases. Zach Poderzy hit a ground ball and reached on an error by the shortstop. Houghton scored. Paul Dorr came into relief Jacob and struck out Ashton Solberg to end the inning.

Neither team scored in the sixth or seventh, and the Vikings fell 6-5.

Jacob Dorr took the loss on the mound for the Vikings. The senior righthander gave up seven hits and six runs in four and two-thirds. Jacob struck out nine and walked three. Paul Dorr pitched 2.1 scoreless innings in relief, striking out four and not walking anyone.

Four Vikings each had one hit in the game: Paul Dorr, Jacob Dorr, Cade Smith and Cy Oberholtzer. Oberholtzer led the team with two RBIs.

Elliot Levens picked up the win for the Nighthawks. He pitched five innings allowing four hits and five runs. Elliot struck out seven and walked four batters. Landen Houghton came in from the bullpen to relieve Levens. Landen pitched two innings. He didn’t give up a hit or a run, striking out four and walking two.

Northeast Range ended with seven hits, three walks and 13 strikeouts.

The Vikings finished with 11 strikeouts and six walks and four hits. Northeast Range ended with three errors and the Vikings committed four fielding errors.

With the loss the Vikings were ousted from the playoffs ending their season with five wins and twelve losses.
