The Cook County girls’ basketball team played toe-to-toe with the bigger Two Harbors Agates last Friday night (December 13), but lost a heartbreaker 43-40 in overtime.

At halftime the Vikings led 20-17. The two teams went back and forth throughout the second half but Two Harbors tied the score with a few seconds left to send it into overtime. The Agates took a slim lead early in the overtime and outscored the Viking 8-5 to take the victory 43-40.

Late in overtime Breana Peterson fouled out, leaving the Vikings’ best player on the bench with about 20 seconds left. For the night Peterson led all scorers with 20 points. Lily Gruber-Schulz scored 12 points and hauled down 5 offensive rebounds and 12 defensive rebounds to total 17 boards for the night. Suzy Burton made 5 points; Liz O’Phelan scored 2 points; and Essance Haines scored 1 point. The Vikings tallied 10 offensive boards to Two Harbors’ 16 offensive boards.

Despite the loss, Head Coach Mitch Dorr saw a lot of positive things from his players.

“We played a pretty good game on Friday night against a big and physical Two Harbors team. I thought Breana played her heart out as she scored 17 of our team’s final 20 points.

“We were a couple of box outs away from winning, as they scored 12 of their points on offensive rebounds. We really need to improve in that department.

“The team played hard. …now we have to find some players willing to work on their individual games so we can find some more scoring punch as the season continues,” said Coach Dorr.
