Plagued by injuries and young to boot, the Cook County Vikings’ football team lost its fourth straight game 38-16 at home against Deer River on Friday, September 20.

After receiving the opening kickoff deep in their own territory the Vikings hurt themselves early with a fumble on the second play of the game. The loose ball was recovered by Deer River on the Vikings’ 8-yard line. The Warriors used two running plays to punch the ball in, and after the extra point the Vikings trailed 7-0 with just a few ticks off the clock.

The next series didn’t get much better for the Vikings who started offense on their 35-yard line. Three plays later, however, the Vikings were pushed back to their 17-yard line and forced to punt.

Deer River took over on about the 50-yard line. Two long runs by Warrior quarterback Aaron Drotts and a 10-yard pass to wide receiver Kole Schultz gave Deer River its second touchdown with 6 minutes to go in the first quarter. After the Warriors completed their 2-point conversion the Vikings were down 15-0.

Joe Borud took the next kickoff to the Vikings’ 36-yard line and the Vikings took the ball to the Deer River 11-yard line behind long runs by Borud and fullback Jacob Schroeder. However, once again the Vikings fumbled and Deer River took over at its 17-yard line. Three plays later 135-pound Colton Haines zig zagged his way through Viking tacklers for an 81-yard touchdown run. The extra point made it 22-0.

With 5:54 to go in the first half Deer River scored again to make it 29-0.

The Vikings finally came to life after Owen Anderson returned the Warriors kickoff to the Vikings’ 36-yard line. After gaining 10 yards in the next two plays on the ground, Jacob Schroeder busted through the Warriors’ line and rumbled for a 56-yard touchdown run. Schroeder also carried the ball across the line for the 2-point conversion.

Early in the third quarter the Vikings moved the ball down the field and quarterback Leo Johnson found tight end Jamie Wick with a short pass, which Wick, although bobbling the ball, bulled his way into the end zone from about 6 yards out. Schroeder carried the ball for the 2-point conversion, making the score 29-16.

Behind a very stiff defense the Vikings completely shut down Deer River throughout the third quarter. Late in the third period the Vikings marched down to the Deer River 8-yard line and Johnson threw a perfect ball to Anderson who dropped it while being hit. The Vikings failed to score on their last best chance to make the game close.

In the fourth quarter Deer River scored 2 points on a safety when the ball was snapped over Johnson’s head and fell into the end zone. After the Vikings kicked off, the Warriors scored their last touchdown on a long run by their tailback to make the score 38-16.

The Vikings totaled 243 yards of offense, 74 of those yards coming by air, and held the ball for 27 minutes during the game.

At press time, the Vikings were headed to Ogilvie on Friday, September 27. Both teams are 0-4 on the year.
