Coming off of one of Cook County High School’s best seasons in years, the 13-7 Viking baseball team placed several players on the leader board for Section 7A.
Offense was seldom a problem for the Vikings this season, and that was borne out in batting averages. The Vikings ended their season with four players batting over .400.
Senior all-star centerfielder Owen Anderson led the team with a .442 batting average, the fourth best average in the section, and that included the Duluth schools and big schools on the Iron Range. A tough out with a good eye at the plate, Anderson often walked to get on base where he caused havoc for the opposing team. Anderson led all players in the section by scoring 28 runs and was second overall in stolen bases with 21.
Tim Miller, a sophomore, wasn’t far behind Anderson. Miller finished with a .438 average and had the third most doubles in the section with 7.
Baseball players had to have a minimum of 30 at bats to qualify.
Miller and Andrew Lashinski tied for third in the region with 13 stolen bases.
Colton Furlong, a sophomore, ended with a .423 average and Leo Johnson, a hard-hitting senior, finished with a .417 average.
As the Vikings’ top relief pitcher, Andrew Miller also had the second lowest earned run average (ERA) with 1.62. Pitchers had to have thrown at least 20 innings over the course of the season to qualify.
