The Cook County High School baseball team lost two games last week, ending a hot streak of 4 wins in 5 games.

On Friday, May 18 the Vikings lost 8-2 to Mesabi East, although the game was fairly close throughout.

Mike Sjogren pitched well against Mesabi, striking out eight while giving up 11 hits and two walks over seven innings. Sjogren also had the hot bat for the Vikings, going 3 for 4 from the plate. Thomas Anderson also had a hot bat, going 2 for 3 while Dylan Quaife was 2 for 4 for the night.

Mesabi took a 2-0 lead after the first inning and then tacked on one more run in each of the next two innings with the Vikings getting one run in the third to trail 4-1. Neither team scored in the fourth or fifth innings.

The Vikings managed a run in the sixth and again held Mesabi scoreless in that inning, trailing 4-2 going into the seventh inning.

The last inning, however, belonged entirely to Mesabi as they scored four more runs and won going away, 8-2.

Mesabi’s pitcher Suslavich gave up 10 hits and recorded 8 strikeouts and gave up one walk. He gave up two earned runs over six innings.

Both teams recorded errors; the Vikings had three for the night while Mesabi had five. Rowbottom and Mount, who teamed up for six hits and five RBIs, led Mesabi.

Vikings lose to Ely 9-1

The Vikings traveled to Ely the next day to face the Ely Timberwolves at Veterans Memorial Field and hoped their luck would change. However, Ely got out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning and the Vikings were never able to make a game of it.

Gustafson got the win for the Timberwolves. He gave up one earned run while striking out four, walking four and giving up five hits.

Ely’s first three runs came on an error, an RBI single and a wild pitch. The Vikings were down 4-0 going into the fifth inning when they again gave up three runs to trail 7-0 going into the sixth inning.

Joe Borud was 2 for 3 at the plate to lead Cook County hitters who were largely held in check.
