The Viking’s girls’ basketball team squared off against two opponents in the Ely Holiday tournament.
Both games came on Wednesday, December 28.
Up first was a game against Carlton. The girl’s got off to a great start, leading the Bulldogs 32-19 at the half. Carlton scored 25 on the second half but the Vikings held on to take the 51-44 victory. “The girls played with a lot of heart and intensity,” said Viking Head Coach Kelly Hawsen. “They also passed the ball well and rebounded, playing a great team game.”
Amery Oberg led the Vikings with 18 points, three baskets coming from behind the three-point arc. Makenzie Fairbanks put in 16, nailing two three-point baskets and Katie Peck had 14 points, sinking one from behind the three-point line. Elaina Deschampe also chipped in three points.
Once again, the Viking’s bench was thin, with only seven players. With that, the players remained relatively foul free. Only Peck and Molly Quello had three fouls in the contest. The other Vikings each had two fouls. Carlton had 15 players but only nine saw action.
With the victory the Viking’s record is 2-1 on the year. The Vikings opened with a loss to Northwoods but rebounded with a win against North Shore rival Silver Bay.
Results of the second game weren’t available at press time.
