Once again the CCHS girls’ basketball team got off to a slow start Feb. 20, falling behind the South Ridge Panthers by 10 points early, and trailed 28-18 at the halftime.
Coming out of the break, the Panthers hit two 3-point baskets in the first minute of play and the Vikings could never close the gap, although they started to work the low post late in the game and Emily Jacobsen began scoring. Jacobsen ended up with 25 points and 10 rebounds, but she was only 5-15 from the free throw line while the team finished 6-20 from the charity stripe.
The final score was 64-46. As Head Coach Mitch Dorr said, “Ouch!”
Sophie Eliasen ended her night with 12 points while Jami Sjogren finished with 4 points and 8 rebounds. Lily Gruber- Schulz had 3 points and Sarah Toftey 2 points to complete the Viking scoring.
As for turnovers, Coach Mitch Dorr exclaimed, “We had too many! We turned the ball over 22 times.”
Rebounds were even, with each team pulling down 26 boards apiece.
“We are giving great effort…. now we just have to start fixing the mistakes we are making,” Coach Dorr said.
Several players gave the Vikings good play off of the bench, but Dorr singled out Bailey Cox. “I thought Bailey played terrific for us off of the bench.”
Coach Dorr honored the Vikings’ lone senior starter, Jami Sjogren before the game. “Jami has been a great leader and team captain for the 2014-2015 Vikings’ basketball squad. Jami has made many contributions to the current and future success of our program both on and off the court.”
Vikings beat Lakeview Christian Academy
The girls traveled to Two Harbors on Monday, February 23 to face the Lakeview Christian Lions. Because Lakeview doesn’t have a basketball court, the boys and girls play their home games in the nearest open gym to Duluth.
Cook County led 20-18 in a hard fought contest at halftime, but pulled away to win by 10 points, 45-35.
Emily Jacobsen did her best Essa Jacobsen (her big sister who is playing basketball in Thunder Bay, Ontario at Lakehead University) impersonation by pulling down 24 rebounds and putting up 17 points.
Jami Sjogren 10, Lily Gruber-Schulz 8, Sophie Eliasen 6, Sarah Toftey 2, and Bailey Cox who had 2 points followed her.
But if Jacobsen was the workhorse on this night a patient Lily Gruber- Schulz made her presence known at the end of the game. “Lily scored 7 of her 8 points down the stretch which helped seal the game for us,” said Coach Dorr. “Jami played big, scoring 10 points as LCA focused their attention on Emily and Emily made some great passes to Jami.
“Our defense played outstanding, focusing on their scorer Eva Reinesten. Sarah Toftey and Maya McHugh traded on and off with her and Lily also guarded her from time to time. She still scored 16, but we really made her work for them,” Dorr said.
Coach Dorr said his team was 12 of 17 from the free throw line, a big improvement over their last game.
The Vikings’ last regular season game was played on Friday, February 26 in Nashwauk against Nashwauk- Keewatin. Playoffs begin next week. Go Vikings!
