The Cook County golf team finished its season after competing in the final day of the Polar League Conference Championship and then in the Section 7AA playoffs. Jake Sivertson had a strong performance for the Vikings in the conference meet and then advanced to the second day of the Section 7AA golf tournament.
On Wednesday, May 20, the Vikings competed in the final day of the Polar League Conference meet at Superior National golf course in Lutsen. Cook County Vikings found themselves down by 29 strokes to first place Esko-Carlton entering the final day of competition.
The Vikings had a great day on their home course, shooting a low score of 360 on the day. Their round was four strokes better than Esko- Carlton’s, but not enough to take the top spot in the conference. While Esko-Carlton came away with the team championship, the Vikings finished in second place.
Senior Jake Sivertson led the Vikings with a solid round of 85. Brock Hommerding had one of his best rounds of the season with an 88. Zack Twiest also played very well with a round of 92. Kipp Sande rounded
out the top four Vikings with a 95. Other finishers for Cook County were: Luke Fenwick (99), Aaron Carlson (99), Shane Billing (101), and Max Simonowicz (106).
Erica Borson was the lone Viking competing in the girls’ conference meet. Borson shot a solid ninehole score of 58.
On the very next day, the team traveled to Giants Ridge for the Section 7AA boys’ tournament. The top four teams of the Section 7AA tournament advance to the second day of competition. Cook County finished in ninth place overall so their season as a team came to an end. The Vikings were led by Sivertson’s solid round of 89, which advanced him to the second round of competition as an individual. Other scores for the Vikings were: Kipp Sande (95), Luke Fenwick (95), Zack Twiest (96), Shane Billings (97), and Brock Hommerding (111).
Sivertson traveled to Giants Ridge on Tuesday, May 26th for the second round of Section 7AA competition. It was a very rainy and windy day that made for harsh playing conditions. The top five individuals that were not on the state qualifying team would advance to the state tournament as individuals. Sivertson was in 12th place after the first day of competition. In second round action, Sivertson struggled a bit, finishing with a score of 112. Sivertson had a great run as a Viking golfer and the program will miss his positive presence both on and off the course.
