Vikings fall to Two Harbors in a doubleheader

The Cook County Vikings fastpitch softball team fell twice in a doubleheader to the Two Harbors Agates last Friday, with the second five-inning game a barnburner.

In Game One, the Vikings gave up six runs in the fourth inning and fell 9-3.

Two Harbors scored one run in the first, and the Vikings tied the game in the second off of a Morgan Starkey groundout that drove in a run. However, the Vikings couldn’t generate enough offense to compete well against the Agates in this game.

Katie Peck took the mound for the Vikings and pitched two and a third innings, giving up one hit and one run while striking out one. Kallie Anderson pitched one and two-thirds innings in relief.

Allie Duclos, Katie Peck, Rachel Dorr and Kallie Anderson all had a hit for the Vikings.

The Vikings committed nine errors in the field while the Agates had six. Viking players walked four times while the Agates were issued eight free passes to the bath paths.

Game Two

If you like offense, this was the game to watch.

The second game was a see-saw affair. The Agates jumped out to a 5-3 lead after one before the Vikings quieted the Two Harbors offense over the next two innings while scoring one run in each of the second and third innings to tie the game going into the fourth.

Two Harbors erupted for nine runs in the fourth while the Vikings tacked on two to make the score 14-7.

The Vikings made a valiant comeback attempt in the fifth inning. Singles by Hattie Crotteau and Rachel Dorr drove in runs, and the Vikings scored off an error on a ball hit by Morgan Starkey and a big triple by Katie Peck. When it was over, the Vikings had scored seven runs, but Two Harbors scored one in the fifth to come out ahead 15-14 in a wild game.

The Vikings tallied 14 hits to 12. Katie Peck was four for four at the plate to lead Viking hitters. Anna Helmerson and Rachel Dorr each had three hits, while Kallie Anderson had two. Charlet Waver, Morgan Starkey and Hattie Crotteau each had one hit.

The Vikings tied the score in the third when Charlet Waver singled on the first pitch, scoring a run. A single by Anna Helmerson brought in a run in the fourth.

Rachel Dorr led the Vikings with three of the team’s nine stolen bases.

Katie Peck started the game on the mound, pitching 3.2 innings with Kallie Anderson coming in relief.

Each team had one strikeout. The Vikings collected five walks while Two harbors had eight. The Vikings finished with three fielding errors, while the Agates weren’t credited with any fielding mistakes.
