The Cook County girls’ basketball team met their match when the visiting North Woods Grizzlies handed them a 72-28 loss last Thursday, December 1 at home.
It was the first game of the season for the Vikings and the second game for the Grizzlies, who played Chisholm on Tuesday, November 29.
Following the game Viking’s Head Coach Kelly Hawsen said, “We played well the first half considering we are playing some young, newer players. We also had a couple girls out, so our bench was a little light. But the girls out rebounded and out hustled their opposition that first half.”
When asked how her players handled North Woods press Hawsen responded, “They did press, but we were able to handle that pressure. I think when the other team subbed four or five players at a time, that’s a tough mental hurdle to overcome, as we mostly used just one sub.”
Scoring points was tough, but Hawsen added, “The girls also got to the free throw line really well, but we struggled to capitalize on those extra points. It was a physical game, and they didn’t back down. There are always things to work on, but I think the girls played well for game 1.”
The Viking’s leading scorer was Katie Peck who had 10 points, six coming off of three-point shots. Makenzie Fairbanks finished with six, MaTaya Fairbanks had two, Molly Quello four, and Amery Oberg had six points. The Vikings were 0-14 from the free throw line.
