The Vikings gave it their all but, on this night, they were no match for the Moose Lake/Willow River (MLWR) basketball team, falling 78-56.
On Friday, March 12, in the Pam Taylor gymnasium at Cook County High School in front of a sparse mask-wearing COVID-19 crowd, a fast-paced basketball game took place, which featured a lot of skill from both teams.
Down by 18 points at the half, the girls made a seven-nothing run to start the second half of play and got the score to within 11 points. However, the hot shooting MLWR girls came right back with a long run of their own, and pretty soon, the Vikings were down by 22 points. Playing all out, the Vikings could never get closer than 18 points for the rest of the game.
Ariana Poyirier led the Vikings with 20 points. She also had a fist full of steals and rebounds. Rhonnie Poyirier also had an outstanding game and scored 18 points and hauled down a lot of boards. Katie Peck was a rebounding force, and she ended her night with eight points. Kamryn Johnson finished with six points and Makenzie Fairbanks and Olivia Jorgenson each had two points on the night. Viking starter Anna Hay didn’t score, but she played a tremendous game on defense.
Moose Lake/Willow River had a deep bench, and their Head Coach John Sandstrom would often pull his five starters and replace them with an equally good substitute starting five. Eleven players scored for the Rebels, and only two of their players were in double figures.
The Rebels also hit eight three-point baskets while the Vikings only made three three-point shots. The Vikings had their first playoff game Wednesday night. Details of that game will be featured in next week’s newspaper.
