Who could navigate through the slippery field the best? That was the big question when CCHS took on the Silver Bay Mariners last Friday afternoon at home on the Lyle Anderson Field.

At the end of a challenging game, the Mariners out-mudded the Vikings 18-0, but the Vikings had their chances to score. Near the end of the first quarter, Ryan Christiansen picked off a Mariner pass and with 60 yards of open field in front of him, he looked like he was going to score. Unfortunately, the sophomore defensive back was caught from behind near the end zone and Silver Bay stopped the Vikings on downs. But time and time again, the Viking ball carriers slipped as they tried to cut back against a rugged Silver Bay defense.

How bad was it? Quick as a cat, Aram Falter rushed fourteen times for 14 yards. Hard running Jonathan Huskey carried the ball 16 times for 20 yards and Isaiah Deschampe carried the ball four times for two yards. Amos Falter carried once for a loss of ten yards. In all, the Vikings gained 26 yards on 35 carries.

Viking quarterback Aram Falter was three of ten passing for 58 yards. Ryan Christiansen was the recipient of two passes for 21 yards, while Amos Falter caught one ball for a 37-yard gain. Meanwhile. Luc Stadler, the Silver Bay quarterback, completed seven of 11 passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns and one interception.

Causing some excitement for the Vikings was Isaiah Deschampe’s kick-off return of 48 yards, but the Vikings couldn’t capitalize against Silver Bay.

On the night, Cook County gained 84 yards while Silver Bay racked up 219 after taking a 9-yard sack for a loss. The Vikings ended with four first downs while the Mariners had ten for the game.

Meanwhile, the bigger Mariners mostly ran straight ahead, gaining 114 yards on 43 carries, which comes out to a 2.6-yard gain per rush. Sophomore middle linebacker Kole Anderson leveled several Silver Bay backs with big hits when they broke through the line. The sophomore linebacker led the team in total tackles with 19.

Other Viking tacklers were Danny Deschampe with nine, Isaiah Deschampe had eight, Vaughn Swindlehurt eight, Jonathan Huskey five, Ryan Christiansen five, Ray Dressley five, and Amos Falter two.

With the game mostly played between the 30 yard lines; it didn’t take long for the wet field to become chewed up and slippery. On this day, Silver Bay was the better team traversing through the mud. The Mariners would score one touchdown in the first quarter on a short pass, three points on a field goal in the second quarter, and nine points on a touchdown reception and a field goal in the fourth quarter.

Cook County was penalized nine times for 88 yards while Silver Bay was flagged three times for 30 yards.
