With a small line-up, some injuries to its squad and few substitutes the Cook County High School Viking football team traveled to Eveleth- Gilbert on October 3 to face the much larger Golden Bears on the Bears’ home field in what proved to be a mismatch.
After the Vikings fumbled the opening kick-off the Vikings defense took the field and couldn’t stop the Golden Bears’ Sam Roberts from scoring on a 13-yard run. The twopoint run conversion was good and Eveleth led 8-0 after a minute of play.
The Vikings went three and out and punted. Sam Roberts’s brother Max scored on a 40-yard run from scrimmage two plays later and the 2-point conversion was good to make it 16-0.
The Vikings took a knee for a safety in the end zone to give up two points when it couldn’t move the ball following the Eveleth kick-off. Sam Roberts ran for two more touchdowns of 52 yards and 35 yards and the Vikings were unable to stop the two-point runs for extra points to fall behind 34-0 after the first quarter of play.
In the second quarter Sam Roberts ran for a 48-yard and 60-yard touchdown and Max Roberts ran for a 2-yard touchdown. The three 2-point rushes for extra points were good to make the score 58-0 at half. Both teams substituted in the second half and the Vikings were unable to score, finishing with a score of 58-0.
The Vikings play Mesabi East after press time, Friday, October 10 at 7 p.m. for Homecoming and face Barnum at home on Wednesday, October 15 for the last regular season game before playoffs start.
