Vikings fall to Eskimos, beat Rangers

Senior guard Mike Sjogren, going up for a two-point shot, has provided a great spark for the boy’s basketball team this year. Although he doesn’t score much, Sjogren plays tough defense, handles the ball well, and plays with a lot of energy.

The Cook County boys’ basketball team lost 59-40 to the Esko Eskimos on Thursday, December 15 in Esko. The boys’ record fell to 3-1 after the loss to Esko, a 3A school. The Vikings are a 1A school and won’t face their Esko rivals in the play-offs.

Although the Vikings played solid ball, they could never really get untracked against the taller, faster, deeper Esko team. The Vikings trailed 31-18 at the half and were outscored 28-22 in the second half but played better after finding their legs. They did not turn the ball over as much as in the final half of play.

David Bergstrom led the Vikings with 12 points. Kale Boomer followed with 9 points, Colin Everson hit for 8 points, and Dylan Quaife finished with 7 points. Mike Sjogren also tallied 4 points for the Vikings.

Jackson Lindquist led Esko with 22 points, five of them 3-pointers. Everson had two 3-pointers for the Vikings who had trouble connecting from downtown all night long. Vikings beat Rangers

Junior guard Colin Everson is as dependable as the Maytag repairman. Game in and game out Everson gives the team solid, high-energy play on both ends of the court. He scores on the inside or from the outside, rebounds, makes smart passes, plays tough-as-nails defense and is one of the leaders on the 4-1 team.

Cook County put together two solid halves of basketball and wore down the Mountain Iron-Buhl (MIB) Rangers on the Rangers’ home court on Monday, December 19, winning the game 53-35.

Senior forward Dylan Quaife had his best game of the year to date, scoring 20 points, most of them on the inside. Senior guard David Bergstrom also played well, scoring 15 points. Both players hit the boards hard and overall the team defense was too much for the MIB Rangers.

According to Head Coach Mitch Dorr, his players came out strong and then struggled. “We had the early game. Then we played the rest of the first half like we were still on the bus. We had many great looks at the basket but our shots just were not falling.

“I was very happy with Jordan Lack’s play off the bench. He came off the bench with a lot of energy and played some great defense. Despite being a bit sluggish off the bus and struggling to make shots, our defense was great and I was happy with our overall effort,” said Dorr.

The Vikings’ record is now 4-1 on the year.

For the game junior guard Kale Boomer scored 5 points and junior guard Colin Everson chipped in 7 points. Two other Vikings, Jonny Jacobsen and Mike Sjogren each contributed 3 points.

Next up for the Vikings is Cromwell on January 6 at Cromwell. The Vikings’ first game at home for the New Year is January 13, when they face Silver Bay at 6:30.
