The Cook County High School (CCHS) Vikings volleyball playoff run ended with a loss to Carlton on Oct. 23 in a match played at Carlton.
Carlton swept the Vikings in three games, 25-19, 25-8 and 25-11.
Alyssa Spry led her team with 26 digs.
Emmalli Myers finished with four kills and seven digs, Molly LaVigne had nine set assists, and Bianca Zimmer ended her night with 10 digs.
Viking head coach Marlene Wester’s young team finished with a record of five wins and 15 losses. However, the Vikings won three out of their last four games and made great strides in their court play throughout the season.
Three seniors graduate from this years’ squad, Alyssa Spry, Bianca Zimmer and Paige Everson. Wester commented on what those seniors meant to her 2019 team.
“My seniors were great role models with incredible leadership. Although our record didn’t show what we accomplished, we had many small team victories that we did get. We had multiple games that went either 4 or 5 sets and kept our team serving percentage over 90 percent. We also had all girls stepping up into various roles on the court, and at any given time, they were able to play numerous spots.
“Our seniors will be greatly missed, and each brought a personal role to the team that will never be replaced. Our seniors as a whole had a combined 94 percent serving with 54 aces, and over 1100 digs throughout their varsity careers,” she said.
For the year, the Vikings recorded a total of 389 kills, 108 team blocks, 1,925 team digs, and they were 89 percent as a team for their serving.
Although the Vikings lost to Carlton, who is ranked fourth in Class A, the team came on like gangbusters at the tail end of the season. Viking fans came out in substantial numbers to support the team, and many are looking forward to seeing how much the kids improve over the next year. Go Vikings!
