The first time around, the Two Harbors girls’ basketball team beat CCHS 57-52 in a game played in Two Harbors. This was the first loss in what would grow to five straight losses for the Vikings.

But since those five losses, the Vikings have played much better, and one way to show that marked improvement was to face a team that had beaten them earlier.

Both teams started out playing tough perimeter defense, and it was hard to get shots to fall. The Vikings only hit 30 percent for the first half of play and led 33-26 going into the break.

In second half action it was all Vikings as they came out with a full court press and ground Two Harbors into teensy weensy agates. The press led to many easy baskets as the Vikings went on a 26-7 run, with senior guard Ashley Deschampe scoring 14 of the Vikings’ first 18 points.

On a night when the seniors were honored, it was also a good night for the Vikings’ other senior starter, Bekah Laky. Laky finished the game with 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists. Deschampe ended her night in the 77-53 win with 27 points, 5 steals, and numerous rebounds. Senior guard Molly Zafft’s season ended early with an injury, but she has been helping to manage the team.

Junior Theresa Morrin finished with 9 points and played well on both ends of the floor, playing scrappy defense and finding the open man on the break.

Eighth-grade center Lily Gruber-Schulz finished the game with 10 points and an astonishing 17 rebounds. In another good sign for the Vikings as they head into the play-offs, Junior Leah Utities notched double figures for the fourth straight game, finishing with 10 points and 7 rebounds. Breanna Peterson also had a great game, ending with 5 steals, 5 assists, 4 rebounds, and 6 points.

The Vikings’ record is now 16-8, and they are 13-3 in the last 16 games.

The Vikings will face Carlton in Esko on Thursday, March 1st.
