Vikings drop football opener to Ogilvie Lions

With almost its entire lineup graduated last year, the Cook County Vikings got off to a rough start in their first football game of the season, losing 36-8 to the Ogilvie Lions.

The game was played on Thursday, August 29 at Ogilvie.

Last season the Lions finished their regular season 6-2, winning the Section 2 nine-man league and advancing to the Section championships where they fell to Russell- Tyler-Ruthton.

The Vikings’ 2018 season ended similarly when they won the division title and advanced to play Mountain Iron Buhl in the Section final, losing to a team they had beaten earlier in the season.

The opening season game against the Lions was close for the first half. Ogilvie ran for a touchdown and punched in their two-point conversion to take an 8-0 lead after the first quarter of play.

Ogilvie scored six points early in the second quarter but failed on their two-point try to go up 14-0. A third touchdown and failed two-point conversion gave the Lions a 20-0 lead, but the Vikings answered late in the second quarter.

The Vikings came back to score their lone touchdown on a 65-yard pass completion from senior quarterback Adam Dorr who threw to junior tight end Vaughn Swindelhurst. Aram Falter ran in the twopoint conversion to make it 20-8 as the teams went into the locker room for halftime.

A third-quarter touchdown and two-point conversion by the bigger, stronger Lion team put the game out of reach for a game Viking team.

Ogilvie, which had a huge line and huge fullback, featured a very strong running game and controlled the ball for much of the fourth quarter, scoring one more touchdown and two-point conversion to take the 36-8 victory.

Keenan Hingos led the Vikings with 14 tackles. Adam Dorr was 7-14 passing for 140 yards and one touchdown. No other stats were available at press time.

The Viking coaches are still moving kids around to see where they will fit in the best on offense and defense. Here is the team’s roster and positions (or just their year in school) listed to date: Jordan Porter, senior tight end; Adam Dorr, senior quarterback and safety; Paul Dorr, freshman; Devon Premo, senior; Keenan Hingos, senior center; Jacob Dorr, sophomore; Masen McKeever, senior running back and cornerback; Anthony Wiele, junior; Aram Falter, junior running back; Ben Rex, freshman; Danny Deschampe, junior; Daunte Deschampe, sophomore running back and defensive end; Jonathan Huskey, junior; Kole Anderson, freshman; Ryan Christianson, freshman; and Vaughn Swindelhurst, junior tight end and defensive lineman.

The Vikings face Carlton tonight (Friday, Sept. 6) at home. The game starts at 7 p.m.

On Friday, September 20 the Ely Timberwolves come to town to play a match against the Vikings. That game also starts at 7 p.m. Come out and cheer for your Vikings!
