Vikings do well at Polar League conference meet




The boys’ and girls’ track teams traveled to the Polar League conference track meet held in Two Harbors on May 14 and according to Head Coach April Wahlstrom, came away with, “some great races, fine marks and nice surprises.”

Despite no track to train on and no long jump pit, no discus/ shot-put throwers circle, no high jump standards or pole-vaulting equipment, the kids acquitted themselves quite well. The girls’ team finished in 8th place out of 12 teams while the boys placed 11th out of 12 teams.

For the boys, senior distance runner Joey Chmelik placed 6th in the 3,200 meter run with a time of 11:37.

In the 800 meters 7th grader Leif Anderson ran a personal best 2:33. Finn Garry closely followed him in 2:38 and Roman Schnobrich was in at 2:40. Cy Fortunato placed 10th in the 400 meters in 59 seconds with young runners Jack Viren (70.5) and Lynden Blomberg (93.7) not far behind him.

In the 1,600 meters (one mile) Finn Garry ran 5:35.6 with Will Ramberg closing in 6:18.

Jack Viren and Jack Haussner ran 15.6 and 16.3 in the 100 meters.

Noah Warren threw the shot put 30-feet-8 inches. Viren had a Viking best discus throw of 60 feet.

Will Lamb placed 9th in the triple jump with a hop, skip and jump of 35 feet. Jerod Spry long jumped 13-feet-3 inches and he ran the 300-meter hurdles in 54.3 seconds. The boys’ 4×800 meter relay team finished 5th in 10:04.

The girls’ team scored important points in both long distance and sprint events.

Maya McHugh and Matea Acero placed 3rd and 4th in the 3,200 meters, running 13:46 and 13:58. Seventh-grade sprint wonder Sophie Eliasen placed 5th in the 200 meters with a fine time of 28.9 with Anna Carman (32.5) not too far behind.

Ninth-grader Molly Thomas had a great day on the track, placing 4th in the 400 meters with a time of 65 seconds. Sophie Honeder finished 16th in 83 seconds.

Morgan Weyrens-Welch ran a nice double finishing the 800-meters in 2:56 and the 1,600-meters in 6:32.5. Alyssa Martinson (6:43.7) and Marin Hay (7:02) weren’t too far behind her in the 1,600 meters.

Sophie Honeder ran 3:16 and Julia Larsen 3:18 in the 800 meters.

Tarin Hanson led Viking 100-meter dash runners across the line in 15.7 seconds. Linnea Henrikson finished in a fast 16.17 seconds with Amelia Roth closing hard in 18.12. Mel Stoddard was the lone 100-meter hurdler for the Vikings, finishing in 21.32. Henrikson ran 64.5 for the 300-meter hurdles with Stoddard (68.2) and Amelia Roth (74) finishing strong.

Alicia Smith threw the shotput 23 feet while teammates Danielle Hansen threw 20 feet and Morgan Weyrens-Welch 15 feet. Smith also led Viking discus throwers with a throw of 51 feet 9 inches. Stoddard led the Vikings in the triple jump with a nice leap of 24 feet. Lucy Callander led the Vikings in the long jump with a jump of 10 feet 9 inches with Stoddard 2 inches back with a leap of 10 feet 7 inches.

The girls also earned points in the 4×200 meter relay race with a 5th place finishing time of 2:04.
