Vikings do well at Esko Showcase track meet

The Vikings might not have any track and field to train on, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t good at the sport. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams competed at Esko, and both performed admirably in the blue and white. Up top, leading the hurdles race is Jack Haussner while below, a baton-wielding Keegan Morrison sprints down the track. Claire LaVigne passes the baton to Robin Henrikson in the girls’ 4x200-meter relay.

Both the boys’ and girls’ track teams had some excellent individual performances at the Esko Showcase track meet held on Saturday, May 5.

Vikings’ track coach Chris Hegg said, “We started out with some fantastic performances in the Sprint Medley Relay, and went all the way through till we left. We had perfect weather and lots of PR’s, but don’t have the official results yet.”

While the results might not be official, the kids performed very well, with the boys showing remarkable improvement.

Boys

Leif Anderson won the 400 meters with a time of 55.39. Leif also ran some fast legs on relay teams during the day.

Jack Haussner had an epic day on the track. Jack placed first in the 110-meter hurdles with an excellent time of 17.09. Haussner also placed second in the triple jump with a hop, skip and jump totaling 36 feet, 8 inches. But topping those performances was his 300-meter hurdle race.

As good as Haussner is in the high hurdles, he might be better in the long hurdle race. Jack captured first place in the 300-meter hurdle race, winning in 44.44 seconds. Jack’s time was the second-best overall including all of the athletes who competed in the big school class.

Will Surbaugh ran a lifetime best in the 1600-meter run and placed second in 4:50.11.

Kevin Viren also ran a personal best in the 1600-meter run and finished fifth place in 5:11.59.

David Blackburn placed seventh in the 100 meters in 13.02, with Connor Frank placing 14th in 14.61.

The boys’ 4×200-meter relay team placed fourth, and the boys’ sprint medley relay won with a time of 3:52.86; the 4×800-meter relay team placed second in 10:19.85.

All in all, it was a great day for the boys’ team.

Girls

A small contingent of girls ran well for the Vikings.

Olivia Nesgoda placed ninth in the 100 meters with a time of 15.5 seconds.

Cecilia Chmelik placed fourth in the 1600 meters in 7:04.81 and Chloe Blackburn was fifth in 7:17.89.

Robin Henrikson placed sixth in the 100-meter hurdles in 21.31 seconds and finished third in the 300-meter hurdles in 1:03.68.

The girls’ 4×200-meter relay team finished third in 2:05.8.

A win in the sprint medley relay finals was icing on the cake for the girls’ relay team, who took the victory with a time of 4:59.35, beating second place by almost 30 seconds.
