Vikings do well at Esko Early Bird practice track meet

It was only a practice meet, but the results were promising for many of the CCHS track and field athletes.

The Vikings headed to Esko’s Early Bird meet on Tuesday, April 16, to compete with athletes from 11 teams from area high schools.

“Although this meet isn’t scored, there is great competition as athletes are ready to see where they are stacked against the competition,” said Viking head coach April Wahlstrom.

“Cook County was well represented today,” added the coach.

Jack Haussner ran away from the field in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 15.9 and set a new personal record. He tied for first in the 100-meter dash, and he finished in second place by a nudge in the 200-meter dash.

Haussner also set a new personal record in the long jump with his first-place finish jump of 19’9.”

“In spite of his great success Jack was already listing the ways in which he can improve,” said coach Wahlstrom, adding, “It will be fun to watch him this season.”

Will Surbaugh ran a strong mile, going out fast with the winner Wyatt Rauvola from Floodwood who finished in 4:46 followed by Surbaugh in 4:55. There are several milers in the section that have already made the state qualifying time of 4:24, showing the section has a lot of good milers this year. Will also finished in fourth place in the 800 meters with a time of 2:12.

Molly LaVigne had a seventh-place finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.10 and took third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 66.4.

Sophie Eliasen finished ninth in the 200- meter dash with a time of 29.6; winning that event was Carrina Marolta from Silver Bay with a time of 27.90.

Claire LaVigne went out strong in the mile and finished with a 10th-place finish with a time of 6:23.

Robin Henrikson finished in seventh place with a time of 1:02 in the 300-meter hurdles.

Hand-offs were smooth in both the girls’ and boys’ 4×400 meter relays, said coach Wahlstrom. “The relay teams are coming along nicely; the boys finished in fourth place, and the girls finished in fifth place,” she said.

“It was nice to finally get to a track to race and give the chance for the kids to compete,” said coach Wahlstrom. “We still have much work to do, and many kids are still working on getting into shape. It will be exciting to compare their marks from this meet to the end of the season to monitor their improvement.”
