The Cook County High School volleyball team traveled to Proctor on Monday, September 25 and played four close games but in the end prevailed 26-24, 25-21, 19-25 and 26-24 to defeat the Rails.
Senior outside hitter Meredith Sutton led the team with 24 kills and 29 digs. Raina Ryden finished with 24 set assists and 14 digs; Reilly Wahlers had nine kills and 18 digs; Alyssa Lashinski had five service aces; and Sophie Eliasen had nine kills, 14 digs, and four service aces.
For Viking team leader Meredith Sutton, this game will remain unique long after she forgets the final scores. The UMD-bound Sutton recorded her 1,000th kill in the contest, a tribute to her teammates who feed her the ball, and testimony to her years of dedication and hard work to make her game better every year.
Sam Pogatchnik, who finished with 19 kills, led Proctor. Sam also had 7 set assists, 11 digs, and three service aces.
Vikings defeat Lakeview
On Tuesday the Vikings traveled to Cotton to face Lakeview Christian. Lakeview, a Duluth private school, doesn’t have its gym, so “home” games are played where gym space is available.
The Lakeview Christian Lions went down without much of a whimper against the Vikings in a game played at Cotton on Tuesday, September 26.
Jasmine Smith led the Vikings with seven ace serves. Meredith Sutton finished with seven kills.
The Vikings won three straight games by the scores of 25-8, 25-16 25-22.
Next up is a home game against Two Harbors on Thursday, September 28 after the paper has been put to bed. The Vikings then travel to Two Harbors two days later to play in a tournament.
The Vikings get a healthy dose of home cooking next week. They play three matches on their home floor.
On Monday the Vikings host North Woods. Tuesday, Silver Bay comes to town and Friday the Vikings’ biggest nemesis, Carlton, will be here for what should be an exciting showdown of the two best teams in Section 7A.
