With junior starting quarterback Kale Boomer sidelined due to a knee injury it was up to senior captain Mike Sjogren to step up and lead the Vikings. And lead the Vikings he did, handling the quarterback duties like last year’s version of Michael Vick as he guided the Vikings to a 60-8 victory over the East Central Eagles last Friday night at East Central.
Cook County’s record is now 4-1 and East Central fell to 1-4.
Sjogren scored the Vikings first three touchdowns on runs of 61 yards, 58 yards and 20 yards. Colin Everson converted two of the extra point kicks and the Vikings were up 20-0 before the Eagles had time to fluff up their feathers. Dylan Quaife ended first quarter scoring with a 66-yard romp of his own and Everson’s kick was good, giving the Vikings a 27-0 first quarter lead.
The second quarter saw Quaife and Sjogren each run for another touchdown; Quaife from 10 yards out and Sjogren scampered in for an 18-yard score. Everson was good on one extra point and missed on another attempt. The Vikings went into halftime with a 40-0 lead.
Peter Warren started off the third quarter, scoring with a short run, muscling in from 3 yards and Mark Marxen added a 22-yard run to send the Vikings into the fourth quarter with a 52-0 lead.
Fourth quarter action was handled largely by the Vikings’ junior varsity. Ben Kroska scored the Vikings’ last touchdown on a 3-yard run and he also ran in a two-point conversion.
East Central’s Bart Jonnson scored the Eagles’ lone touchdown, running in from 5 yards out. East Central converted its two-point attempt and ended up on the short end of the stick by a score of 60-8.
Sjogren led all ball carriers with 202 yards on 8 carries and averaged 25.3 yards per carry. Dylan Quaife ran 12 times for 186 yards, gaining 15.5 yards per carry. Mark Marxen gained 101 yards on 6 carries for a 16.8 yard average and Peter Warren ran the ball 9 times, gaining 76 yards for an 8.4 yard average per carry.
On defense, Warren led the team with 10 tackles, 3 of them unassisted. Colin Everson and Quaife were in on 8 tackles. Jacob Schroeder and Brad VanDoren each had 6 tackles while Mike Sjogren and Gunnar Anderson had 5 tackles and Jordan Lack finished with 4 tackles.
The Vikings face undefeated 6-0 Ogilvie at home tonight (Friday, October 15) for the Homecoming game. Judging from opponents each have both played, the teams appear to be evenly matched. Game time is 7 p.m.
