This past week the Vikings continued their hot streak, adding five more wins and upping their season record to 15 victories versus three defeats.
Cook County’s junior outside hitter Meredith Sutton has played big for the Vikings all year, but she might have had her best game to date against the Two Harbors Agates last Thursday, September 29 on the Agates’ home floor.
Sutton recorded 28 kills and 27 digs, leading the Vikings to a 3-1 victory over an upset minded Agate team, but Sutton had a lot of help from her teammates.
After losing the first game 25-22, the Vikings rallied to take the next three games 25-17, 25-13 and 25-19.
Emily Jacobsen finished with 12 kills, Reilly Wahlers 18 digs and Raina Ryden ended her night with a teamhigh 36 digs.
Ayla Lemke’s 12 kills, seven blocks and 27 digs, and Alyssa Ruberg’s 20 set assists and 13 digs led two Harbors.
With the win the Vikings upped their record to 11 wins, three losses and currently sit in third place in the conference with a 6-1 mark. Carlton and Esko lead with unbeaten records.
Vikings champions at Two Harbors Invitational
The Vikings traveled back to Two Harbors on Saturday, October 1, to play in the Two Harbors Invitational and came away with three victories and the championship.
“First we played Proctor and won 25-23, 25-10, then we faced Mesabi East and won 25-14, 25-21 to set up the championship match with Silver Bay,” said Head Coach Pam Taylor.
The Vikings won the first game 25-7, lost 25-23, and then took the deciding game 25-9 to take home first place and up their season record to 14-3. As of press time, there were no stats available for these three games, said Taylor.
Vikings victorious over Floodwood
Once again the Vikings boarded the bus and made the long ride to Floodwood to play the Polar Bears in a Polar League conference match.
The Vikings won in three straight games 25-19, 25-12 and 25-22. Due to the late arrival home and lack of time to tally the Vikings stats, none were ready for the press.
To date, Meredith Sutton leads the team with 274 kills and 24 blocks. Raina Ryden leads in serving aces (26) digs (446) and receptions (259). Tarin Hanson has team-high 395 assists.
The Vikings played McGregor at home on Thursday, October 6 after press time and then travel to play Cromwell on October 11, and Carlton October 18 before the playoffs start. Go Vikings!
