The Cook County High School boys’ and girls’ track team traveled to Duluth Denfeld on Saturday, May 11 to take part in the Matt Kero Memorial Invitational. The meet featured a mix of large schools and small schools competing on an equal footing, with no discrimination based on enrollment.
Running in a new event, Jack Haussner, a junior, placed 12th in the 100 meters, sprinting the distance in 12.45 seconds. Jack also placed third in the 110-meter high hurdles with an excellent time of 16.87 seconds.
Leif Anderson, a junior, finished seventh in the 400-meter run with a clocking of 55.53 seconds. David Blackburn, a senior, placed 12th in the 400 meters with a time of 57.31. Sophomore Keegan Morrison ran 67.64 seconds for the quarter mile and Tanner Deboer, a ninth grader, ran 71 seconds for the quarter.
Kevin Viren, a ninth grader, ran 5:19.28 in the 1600 meters (one mile) to place 15th overall.
Will Surbaugh, a sophomore, placed third in the 3200 meter (2-mile) with a time of 10:46.98.
The boys’ 4×800 meter relay team placed eighth in 10:12.94.
Lyndon Blomberg, a junior, threw the discus 66 feet, one inch to place 33 overall and he threw the shot put 27 feet, 11 inches to finish 37th in that event.
Girls
Payton Dobin, a sophomore, ran the 100 meters in 15.96 seconds to place 36th.
Anna Hay, an eighth-grader, placed 21st in the 400 meters with a time of 75.61 seconds.
Chloe Blackburn, a sophomore, placed 34th in the 1600 meter run with a time of 6:59.73 and right behind her was Louise Ramberg, a ninth-grader, clocking a 7:01.43.
The girls’ 4×800 meter relay team placed 8th with a time of 2:38.07.
Lucy Callender, a senior, finished 12th in the discus with a throw of 71 feet 6 inches. Hailey Smith, ninth grade, placed 15th with a throw of 66 feet 2 inches. Hailey also placed 13th in the shot put with a throw of 24 feet 8 inches.
The track team participated in the Polar League track meet held in Two Harbors on Wednesday, May 16. Results of that meet will be published next week.
