On Friday, May 9, the Viking track and field team headed down to Duluth to put forth their best effort at the Matt Kero Memorial Invitational at Denfeld High School. This was a new meet for us and it was fun to race against some different teams such as Duluth East, Hastings, Denfeld, Ashland, and then there were some teams from our section as well (Proctor, Moose Lake, South Ridge, Cromwell, and Two Harbors). The athletes were happy to be in competition mode again as our last meet at the end of April was cancelled due to snow.
We had several breakthrough races on this day. Julia Larsen ran the 800 and had a huge personal record with a time of 3:05 placing her 23rd.
Alyssa Martinson was our top miler on this day with a time of 6:37 placing 16th.
We had three 300-meter hurdlers and Linnea Henrickson had a breakthrough with over a 30-second improvement and a time of 1:09. She was followed by Melanie Stoddard with a time of 1:15 and Amelia Roth braved her first race and ran a time of 1:20.
Another highlight was our girls’ relay teams. Our 4×100 came in 8th place with a time of 58.01. This team included Molly Thomas, Anna Carman, Sophie Eliasen, and Tarin Hanson.
Our girls’ 4×200 team finished in 7th place with a time of 2:04. This team includes Molly Thomas, Anna Carman, Sophie Eliasen, and Maya McHugh. This team will be a strong contending team at the conference meet this week.
Our girls’ 4×400 team came in 8th place with a time of 5:00. They are Molly Thomas, Alyssa Martinson, Sophie Eliasen, and Anna Carman. Lastly, our girls’ 4×800 team came in 4th place with a time of 11:32. This was a good improvement for this team which includes Maya McHugh, Alyssa Martinson, Morgan Weyrens- Welch, and Matea Acero.
These relay teams have really worked hard on their exchanges and they were fluid. These girls really work well together and it was fun to see them be so successful against these larger schools.
On the boys’ side, Leif Anderson had a breakthrough in the 800m run. He went out tough, settled in to his pace, and kicked it in hard with 200 meters to go finishing with a time of 2:37.
Joey Chmelik was our top miler for the day finishing with a time of 5:23 in 11th place. Behind him was Finn Garry who had a breakthrough. He stayed focused and went after the competition helping him to finish in 20th place with a time of 5:43. Our 4×100 team including Cy Fortunato, Jerod Spry, Noah Warren, and Jack Haussner came in 13th with a time of 56.48. This team has really shown a lot of improvement in their hand-offs and this helped to bring their time down. The Vikings’ 4×200 team came in 9th place with a time of 2:04 and included Noah Warren, Jack Haussner, Jack Viren, and Will Lamb. Our 4×800 team of Joey Chmelik, Roman Schnobrich, Finn Garry, and Leif Anderson finished in 10th place with a time of 10:07.
This week we are gearing up for our Conference meet which will take place on Wednesday, May 14 at Two Harbors. The races and events will begin at 2:00 p.m.
