The Cook County boys’ basketball team has been busy. Over Christmas they traveled to Calvin Christian High School in Fridley and played three games from December 27-29 in an eight-team tournament and on January 3, they played Silver Bay at home.

“The Christmas Tourney went well,” said head coach Mitch Dorr. “We took fourth place out of eight teams. We also took the guys to see an exciting game between the Gophers and Michigan State,” which the Gophers lost by one point.

Will Ramberg scored 18 points and Trusen Gordon 9 points to lead the Vikings to a 44-40 win over the Charter Stars in the Vikings’ first tournament game.

“This was a good first win,” said Coach Dorr. “We lost the lead late in the game, but came back to win on four key free throws in a row by Will and Leif Anderson.”

The Vikings lost their second game in overtime, falling 54-43 to Heritage Academy. Once again Ramberg led the team in scoring with 21 points and Dyami Blackwell finished with 9 points.

“The game went into overtime, but when Sam O’Phelan fouled out we couldn’t compete without him,” said Dorr of his senior captain.

Game 3 was equally close, but the Vikings lost 43-39 to Calvin Christian High School. Leading scorers were Trusen Gordon, 11 points, and Dyami Blackwell, 9 points.

Vikings lose to Silver Bay

Playing in front of a home crowd on Tuesday, January 3, the CCHS boys’ basketball team was down early 12-4 to the Silver Bay Mariners before coming back and taking a 28-27 halftime lead in a game that was close most of the way. Senior guard Marcus Logan hit three 3-point shots in the first half to lead the Vikings.

The two teams exchanged baskets early in the second half before the Mariners pushed to a 42-38 lead behind the guard play of Jason Blood. Unfortunately, the Vikings didn’t score another point for the next six minutes of play, and Silver Bay extended its lead to 10 points.

Down 50-40, Mike Burton snuck in through traffic for a lay-up and Trusen Gordon hit a big 3-point shot to pull the Vikings within 5 points with about one minute left to play. Silver Bay played keep away at that juncture, forcing the Vikings to foul. Weston Monson and his brother Hunter Monson each took turns being fouled and sank their foul shots, sealing the 58-46 win for the Mariners.

Marcus Logan led the team with 13 points while Trusen Gordon finished with 10 points. Dyami Blackwell was sick and couldn’t play in the game.

The Vikings travel to Two Harbors on January 6 before coming home to play Floodwood at home on January 13. The game starts at 4:45 p.m. Come out and cheer for your Vikings!
