A steadily improving Cook County girls’ high school varsity basketball team traveled to Wrenshall last Friday and behind a stiff man defense, kept the Wrens’ offense pretty much grounded and won by the score of 72-31.
The 72 point total is a high for the Vikings this year, with eight players scoring points for the team.
With the win, the Vikings are now 4-1 in conference play and rank fifth out of 19 schools in the Polar League large school division. The loss dropped the Wrens record to 0-6 on the year.
Junior Ariana Poyirier had her best night of the year on offense, scoring 27 points to lead the Vikings in the lopsided win.
Senior guard Abbie Crawford also had a good night on offense, netting 15 points. Junior center Paisley Smith was in double figures, contributing 10 points. At the same time, senior guard Alyssa Spry had 8, ninth-grader Makenzie Fairbanks 7, ninth-grader Anna Fragle 3, and Katie Peck, who is also a ninth-grader, contributed 2 points.
Two Harbors comes to town
Next up for the girls is a home game against the Two Harbors’ Agates on Friday, January 31. The game will start at 6:30 p.m.
Duluth East Greyhounds play here Saturday
The next day the girls play the Duluth East Greyhounds in an afternoon home game. The game was initially made between the two schools because Brea Boomer was the Duluth East head girls’ basketball coach, but Brea stepped away from coaching to pursue a modeling career. Following her modeling career, Brea hopes to return to teaching and coaching. With the game penciled in for the Saturday date, despite Brea’s absence, the two teams agreed to meet and play. Come out and cheer for your Vikings!
