The Cook County girls’ basketball team won one of its two Polar League Conference match-ups last week to bring its overall season record to 21-3. On Tuesday, February 16, the Vikings beat the overmatched Wrenshall Wrens, 79-12. On Friday, the Vikings traveled to Esko and lost to the 18-4 Eskimos, 45-54.
In Wrenshall, the Vikings made quick work of the Wrens, jumping out to an early 24-0 lead. At one point, Bekah Laky and Brea Boomer combined to score 10 straight points. Senior center Essa Jacobsen sat out the game with a sore knee. Her teammates picked up the missing slack, as their outstanding defense propelled the Vikings to a 48-5 halftime lead. Christina Nelson and Laky both had 10 points each for Cook County in the first half.
Head Coach T.J. Super didn’t even play his five starters in the second half. The junior varsity squad started the second half and 15 girls played, 13 of whom scored. Freshman Molly Zafft played well, scoring 12 points off the bench for the Vikings to lead the team.
In addition to Zafft’s 12 points, Nelson and Laky added their 10 points each, and the rest of the scoring was equally dispersed throughout the Viking lineup.
Three days later, the Vikings traveled to Esko in hopes of keeping their Polar League Conference championship hopes alive. In the first half, the Vikings came out strong, as their trapping defense gave the Eskimos fits. Boomer was especially effective, scoring 12 first-half points as Cook County took a 33-26 lead into halftime.
The second half, however, was all Esko, as they outscored the Vikings 28-12 in the final 18 minutes of play. Six of Cook County’s 12 second-half points came from late backto back three-point shots by Ashley Deschampe. Esko’s Keely Deadrick was the story of the second half, however, as she got loose from Cook County’s defense and scored 12 of her 20 points in the final 18 minutes of play.
Cook County also had a hard time against Esko’s zone defense, which features 6’7” center Saranna Trapp. In one stretch, the Vikings turned the ball over five times and were blocked three more times, as they didn’t get a shot off in eight straight possessions.
TheVikings came up short in a comeback bid, falling to Esko, 45-54. Boomer led the Vikings in scoring with 16 points. Deschampe was the only other Viking in double figures with 11 points.
