Friday, January 31 was parents’ night for the cook county high school winter sports teams, and it was also the night of a big game between the Cook County boys’ basketball team and north shore rival Two Harbors’ Agates.

The boys came out strong against the Agates. Playing good defense and getting big baskets from seniors Pete Sutton, Jordan Porter, and Adam Dorr, the team went into the halftime break with a slight lead.

But early in the second half ,Two Harbors, led by their fine guard Trent Gomez, went on a run and built a lead the Vikings could never quite catch.

“We played close most the game,” said Viking Head Coach Colin Everson. “We were up by two at the half, but Two Harbors went on a run in the middle of the second half, and we couldn’t quite work our way back.”

Pete Sutton, who is one of the leading scorers in northern Minnesota, hit just above his game average with 28 points. So far this season, Pete is averaging 27.2 points per game. He can score in multiple ways, shooting from downtown with three-point shots, hitting mid-range jump shots, or slashing to the hoop through traffic, going up high and slamming the ball through the rim.

Jordan Porter also scored big for the Vikings, netting 16 points. Adam Dorr finished with nine points and Tate Crawford two points to complete the Vikings scoring.

In the end, the Vikings fell 66-55, dropping their season record to five wins versus eight losses.

With the victory, the Two Harbors’ season record is now 5-13.

“This game was a great opportunity to continue to grow,” Coach Everson said, adding, “We have to polish a few things up and get ready to make a playoff push here in the last month of the regular season.”

Next for the Vikings is a game against Barnum this Friday night in Barnum. The boys then play Silver Bay in Silver Bay on Tuesday, February 11, and square off against Marshall at home at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 13. The next night they play Esko here at 4:45 p.m. Come out and cheer for your Vikings!
