Vikings beat Two Harbors Agates—twice

Head Coach Mitch Dorr said he would treasure that memory for years to come. Left: Senior forward/ center Dylan Quaife drove for 2 of his 17 points against the Agates. Dylan finished 4th in the conference in scoring with a 16.9 point per game average.

The Cook County boys’ basketball team extended its record to 18-2 on Friday, February 24 when the Vikings faced their North Shore rival, the Two Harbors Agates.

Getting his first start of the year, Hunter Farley took the opening tip from senior Dylan Quaife and scored the first two points of the game. It seemed a good omen and the Vikings looked like they were going to roll. But the team, like the rest of CCHS students, was on winter break and seemed to slumber for much of the first half.

But it was their last home game of the year and the night the seniors were honored, so despite an uninspired first half, the Vikings turned on the jets and won, 60-40, giving up just 10 points in the second half.

The Vikings took a 33-30 lead into halftime and whatever Head Coach Mitch Dorr said to them must have worked, because they came out with a lot of intensity on both offense and defense the second half.

The seniors on this year’s team—a team that has posted one of the finest win/loss records ever for CCHS— are Dylan Quaife, David Bergstrom, Hunter Farley and Mike Sjogren.

Coach Dorr had this to say about these kids, “It has been an absolute blessing to me to have worked with such an outstanding group of young men. Their success goes way beyond the basketball court, as they are winners in the classroom and as people. This season has been an incredible experience because of the great relationships we have on this team.”

David Bergstrom led all Viking scorers with 21 points. He was followed by Dylan Quaife who netted 17, Kale Boomer who hit for 9, Colin Everson with 4, Justin Goldstein with 3, and Jonny Jacobsen, Mike Sjogren and Hunter Farley, who all had 2 points.

Vikings polish Agates one more time

Time flies and the Vikings played Two Harbors again on Tuesday, February 28 in Two Harbors.

Whether it was a glitch in the schedule or someone’s idea of fun, the Vikings played their last two games of the season against Two Harbors, beating them once again 64-52.

But if the score looked closer this time around, the game was still safely in hand as the Vikings took a commanding 36-21 half-time lead into the locker room.

Coach Dorr made sure his bench players saw plenty of action in the second half, and the Vikings played the Agates even in the second half.

Senior guard David Bergstrom led all Viking scorers with 17 points. Dylan Quaife followed with 14, Kale Boomer had 11, Colin Everson netted 8, Mike Sjogren, 4, Justin Goldstein, 3, Jonny Jacobsen, 3, Hunter Farley, 2, and Peter Warren had 2 points.

Charlie Pavlisch led two Harbors with 20 points.

The Vikings’ first play-off game is Thursday, March 8. They are the number 1 seed in Section 7A and finished in second place in the Polar League with a 12-1 record, trailing only 3A school Esko, who posted an 11-0 conference record. The Vikings finished 19-20 overall, posting their second best win-loss record ever. As of press time their playoff opponent isn’t known.
