The Cook County High School girls’ basketball team received somewhat of a test when they traveled to Two Harbors last Friday night and played a far more polished Agate team than they faced on December 14. Last time around the Vikings won 57-29.

This game was more of a contest as the Agates handled the Vikings’ high-octane half court pressure defense much better than the last time the two teams played.

Despite not getting many turnovers and despite not shooting well, the Vikings took a 26-22 lead into halftime.

Coming out of the break, the Vikings played with patience and persistence and perseverance and slowly wore down their determined foes, winning 50-35.

Ashley Deschampe led her teammates with 22 points. Ashley hit lay-ups, midrange shots and even had three 3-pointers. Brea Boomer and Bekah Laky added 8 and 7 points, while Ailee Larson and Theresa Morrin each had 4 points and Taylor Ryden chipped in 3 points. Boomer did her usual good job cleaning the glass, getting lots of help from Morrin, Laky and Ryden, and Larson and Deschampe played tough on defense and handled the ball well in traffic.

Brea Boomer has had an outstanding year for the Vikings. She is one of the top rebounders in the conference and, along with playing tenacious defense, consistently scores in double figures.

The Vikings are now 15-2 on the year and 8-2 in conference play.

On Thursday, Feb. 10 the Vikings faced the Marshall Hilltoppers in Duluth. The girls face the McGregor Mercuries tonight (Friday, Feb. 11) at home.
