Once again the Cook County High School Viking football team established an early lead and just when it looked like they were going to put their opponent away for good—they instead opened a sliver of daylight and the game got interesting.
Leading 32-14 at halftime, the Vikings received the opening kick-off to start the third quarter. The field was wet, the weather windy and cold, and the ball hard and slippery. Sure enough, the kick-off slipped through the hands of the Viking return man and Ely recovered it. Two minutes later, the Timberwolves scored and the Vikings’ lead was down to 32- 20.
Ely’s next kick-off was a line drive that went straight to Dylan Quaife. Quaife took the ball all of the way down to the Timberwolves’ 15-yard-line and it looked like the Vikings were going to get back the touchdown they had just given up. Several plays later, with the Vikings knocking right on the end zone line, the ball was again fumbled and Ely took over.
Six minutes later the Vikings stopped Ely, but not until they had marched about 60 yards down the field. Thethreat was over and the Viking fans could catch their breath.
The fourth quarter saw the Vikings add one more touchdown and hold Ely scoreless.
“I think our guys had a pretty good game,” said head coach Mitch Dorr, adding, “Senior Nick Austin played inspired football and senior guard Brandon Dahl continues to be a guy we can rely on.”
When asked if his team had a let down in the third quarter, Dorr responded, “I didn’t see a let down in our guys at all. However, four turnovers is four too many. Two crucial fumbles in the beginning of the second half made for a tense third quarter. We have to work on securing the ball better.”
Dorr added, “We never had to punt. Turnovers and two key penalties are really the only thing that stopped the Viking drives. So, we need to work on playing a bit more disciplined.”
For the game Dylan Quaife rushed 18 times for 285 yards and four touchdowns.
Offensive Player of the game was Colin Everson. “His blocking was tremendous as he had some key blocks that gave our backs room to move,” said Dorr.
Senior defensive end Trevor Pehrson was named Defensive Player of the game. “Trevor controlled his side well and had numerous tackles for losses in the game,” Dorr said.
