Ariana Poyirier had the hot hand against the Silver Bay Mariners last Thursday night, scoring 19 points to lead the Vikings to a 41-28 victory at home.
With the win, the Vikings’ record is now 4-8. The team is still winless in the Polar “Big” conference which is made up of Esko 16-4; South Ridge 7-5; Barnum 6-9; Two Harbors 6-6; and the Vikings.
Abbie Crawford scored 11 points to be the only other player in double figures. Five players each scored two points in the contest against the Mariners: Emma Gesch, Paisley Smith, Alyssa Spry, Morgan Starkey, and Rhonnie Poyirier.
“We got the win,” said head coach Kelly Hawsen. “Now we are moving forward to a long stretch on the road.”
The Vikings play four straight road games before coming home to take on the Two Harbors Agates on Feb. 1. The game will start at 6:30 p.m. Come out and cheer on your Vikings!
Vikings fall to Cromwell
The next day the Vikings traveled to play the 10-1 Cromwell Cardinals and lost 76-32.
Abbie Crawford was the only Viking in double figures, scoring 15 points against a smothering Cromwell defense. Paisley Smith ended the night with 4 points, Alyssa Spry had 3 points and Ariana Poyirier, Morgan Starkey, Rhonnie Poyirier, Emmalli Myers, and Katie Peck each had two points apiece.
Vikings lose to the Giants
On Tuesday, January 22 the Vikings traveled to Hoyt Lakes to play the Mesabi East Giants, with the Vikings losing 70-28.
Unfortunately, said head coach Kelly Hawsen, “We struggled with turnovers and boxing out.”
Ariana Poyirier was the team’s high point scorer with 11 points. Abbie Crawford finished with 8, Alyssa Spry 3, Emma Gesch 2, Paisley Smith 2, and Rhonnie Poyirier 2.
Abbie, Alyssa and Ariana each made one three-point basket in the contest.
The Vikings’ next home game is against the Two Harbors Agates on Friday, Feb. 1 The game will start at 6:30 p.m. Come out and cheer for your Vikings!
