On a warm drizzly night, the 2018 Cook County Viking football team defeated Onamia 74-0 in nine-man play. It was pretty much a repeat of last year’s game played in Onamia, where the Vikings won 78-0.
The Vikings limited Onamia to minus two yards on offense while gaining 357 yards on the ground and 69 yards through the air to total 426 yards.
Seeing scant time in the backfield, senior running back Ethan Sporn rushed for 96 yards on eight carries, scoring one rushing touchdown and scoring another TD on a punt return.
Sporn gained 256 all-purpose yards between rushes, punt returns, and kickoff returns. Sporn also had two long touchdown runs called back because of penalties.
Quarterback Josh Prom ran for 155 yards on nine carries and scored one touchdown in limited action as the Vikings played all four of their quarterbacks.
The Vikings averaged 10.8 yards per carry and scored on every twopoint conversion.
Following the kick-off and a quick three and out for Onamia, the Vikings recovered the punt on their 35 and used two plays to score a touchdown. The second play was a long scamper around the end by senior running back Ethan Sporn who raced 50 yards for a score. Sporn also ran in the two-point conversion and just like that it was 8-0.
The Vikings scored on every offensive series in the first half, averaging a touchdown every three offensive plays. The score was 24-0 at the end of the first period and 48-0 at the half. One of those touchdowns came on a nice 41-yard throw by Adam Dorr to Tristen Bockovich for a touchdown.
Second half play saw the Vikings’ reserves take to the field and they scored as well. Early in the third period, running back Masen McKeever took his first carry of the game 45 yards untouched up the middle to score a touchdown.
Overall the Vikings recorded four sacks and picked up three fumbles. Dillon Sjogren led the team with six hard tackles and also led the team in touchdowns, carrying the ball four times for 23 yards and netting three touchdowns.
Other top Viking tacklers included Donta Deschampe, Keenan Hingos and Jordon Porter, who each had four tackles. Joe Deshampe, Ethan Sporn, Vaughn Swindlehurst, Tristen Bockovich, and Aram Falter each had 2.5 tackles.
First-year head coach Bryan Carpenter was pleased with his team’s performance. “I was very happy with our effort. We were pretty sharp and didn’t make too many mistakes. We executed well on both sides of the ball, offense, and defense.”
On the plus side for Onamia, they are a young team with some size. They did get four first downs in the game but ended up losing yardage for the game due to sacks or tackles in the backfield.
