Led by running back Jonathan Huskey’s two touchdowns and a 42-yard interception return for a touchdown by Ryan Christiansen, the Cook County High School Vikings’ football team got its first win of the season against Northeast Range on Thursday, November 5.
Huskey picked up 112 yards on 24 carries in the low scoring game that was played in Babbitt. Aram Falter gained 22 yards on ten carries while Kole Anderson ran for 14 yards on four carries against the Nighthawks stingy defense.
But if the Nighthawks defense was miserly, the Vikings were even better at stopping the ground game, giving up a total of 58 yards on the ground, the longest gain 12 yards, on 31 carries for the Iron Range team.
Viking quarterback Aram Falter was two of four passes for 19 yards. One of his completions resulted in a two-point conversion. Vaughn Swindelhurst caught one pass for 16 yards, while Shaun Brozek was the recipient of a three-yard pass that resulted in two points.
Overall the Vikings ended the game with 145 yards and six first downs while Northeast Range finished with 80 yards and five first downs.
Penalties hurt the Vikings throughout the game. The Vikings ended with six penalties that resulted in 50 yards lost, while the Nighthawks were only penalized once, resulting in a ten-yard loss.
Ryan Christiansen led the team in total tackles with nine. Three other Vikings: Kole Anderson, Isaiah Deschampe, and Vaughn Swindelhurst, each had seven tackles. Danny Deschampe and Jonathan Huskey had five tackles, Flynn Calendar and Aram Falter three, Ray Dressley two and Shaun Brozek one tackle.
Three Vikings had sacks in the game: Vaughn Swindelhurst, Danny Deschampe, and Isaiah Deschampe. Isaiah Deschampe had three tackles behind the line of scrimmage while Swindelhurst and Christiansen had two.
The Vikings played Cromwell on Thursday, November 12, after the paper’s deadline. The results will be posted next week.
