Vikings beat Nighthawks twice, lose one to Cromwell Cardinals

The Vikings’ young softball team is learning on the run this season, getting better each game.

On Saturday, May 11 the girls picked up two wins over Northeast Range in a doubleheader played at the Rec Park.

The Vikings took the first game 17-7.

A big fourth inning allowed the Vikings to take a commanding lead over the Nighthawks in the first game of the day. With the bases loaded Katie Peck walked to bring in one run. A pitch hit Kalina Dimitrova, and that brought in another run. Emmalli Myers was up next and she got a hold of a pitch and drove it into the outfield for a double on a 2-2 count. Myers’ clout brought in three runs. Alyssa Spry tripled, scoring two runs and Amy Carpenter was walked, bringing in the last of eight runs the Vikings recorded in that inning.

Emma Smith was the winning pitcher. Emma gave up six hits, seven runs and struck out five over six innings.

The Vikings recorded 11 hits in the game. Alyssa Spry, Abbie Crawford, Katie Peck, and Carpenter all collected multiple hits. Spry was 3-5 at the plate. The team recorded seven stolen bases with Crawford taking two.

Game two

Keeping up the momentum, the Vikings throttled the Rangers 23-6 in the second game of the doubleheader.

Abbie Crawford led the team with five RBIs off of two triples and a walk.

Katie Peck also smashed a triple in the first inning, scoring a run. A fielder’s choice by Emma Smith’s hit brought in a run as well as walks by Crawford, Alyssa Smith, and a wild pitch while Amy Carpenter was at the plate allowed another run to score.

Abbie Crawford was credited with the victory on the mound. She pitched four innings, striking out seven while giving up six runs and allowing one hit.

Charlet Waver, Kalina Dimitrova, Abbie Crawford, and Katie Peck all had multiple hits for the Vikings. Waver led the team with three hits in five at-bats.

M. Maki took the loss for the Nighthawks. She allowed 10 runs off of five hits for the one inning she pitched.

Vikings lose to Cromwell

The Cook County girls’ fast pitch softball team traveled to Cromwell on Tuesday, May 14 and lost 10-0.

Emma Smith took the loss for Cook County. Emma gave up five runs on one hit over one inning.

Abbie Crawford, Katie Peck, and Kalina Dimitrova each got a hit for the Vikings.

On Thursday, May 16 the Vikings traveled to North Woods to face the Grizzlies. With little rest, the kids will get back on the bus the next day and head to Carlton to face the top-ranked Carlton Bulldogs. And on Saturday they play a doubleheader against Blackduck and International Falls in Ely.

On Tuesday, May 21, the Vikings will face a team from Thunder Bay at home. The game will start at 4 p.m.

The kids play Northeast Range at Northeast Range on May 24. All of the games are subject to change in the event of bad weather.
