Senior Jamie Wick has wielded a big bat all year for the Vikings. Wick got two key hits in the Vikings’ victory over the Northeast Range Nighthawks.
The Vikings traveled to Northeast Range on Friday, April 17 to face the Nighthawks and came away with a 9-7 victory.
Jaret Baker pitched five solid innings giving up five runs on eight hits and was the winning pitcher. Andrew Miller pitched the last two innings giving up two unearned runs on three hits. Baker ended with four strikeouts and five walks while Miller struck out three and walked one batter.
The Vikings scored three runs in the first inning off of hits by Owen Anderson, Richie Furlong, Travis Bradley, and Jamie Wick. Northeast Range came back to tie it by scoring three runs off of three hits and a walk.
Meanwhile the Vikings added two more runs in the second when Colton Furlong reached first base on an error and was driven in by a Travis Bradley triple. Jack Wieben drove Bradley in with a hit and the Vikings were up 5-3.
Neither team scored again until the fifth inning. Northeast Range was first up and scored two runs to tie the score but the Vikings responded with four runs of their own.
Jack Wieben led off the fifth and reached first after being hit by a pitch. Consecutive singles by Jamie Wick, Leo Johnson, and Rory Bakke pushed three runs across the plate. The Vikings’ last run was scored when Colton Furlong drove in Bakke with a single.
Miller took the mound in the sixth and struck out the first hitter and got the second hitter to fly out to Colton Furlong in right field. But Miller walked the next man and the following batter reached second on a double.
A routine grounder to Vikings’ shortstop Rory Bakke went under his glove and the Nighthawks were within two, down 9-7 before Miller struck out the final batter of the inning. Neither tem scored in the seventh inning and the Vikings held onto the win.
The Vikings scored 9 runs on 17 hits, striking out only twice and walking just once. Northeast Range managed just one steal while Viking runners stole 10 times without being caught.
“This game displayed the team’s resiliency,” said Head Coach Arleigh Jorgenson. “These players are learning how to hitch up their pants and get it done There were mistakes, too many of them, but there were also great plays that covered up the mistakes. We feel like we are making good progress in between the cold weather and the snowstorms.
“We are looking forward to the remainder of the schedule, knowing that we are going to play better and better as we get some games under our belts.”
The Vikings are now 3-2 on the year, but Jorgenson said his team feels like it should be unbeaten. “We feel like we should have won every game we have played this year,” Jorgenson said.
The Vikings’ next home game is Tuesday, April 28 against Barnum at 4 p.m. Come out and cheer for your Vikings!
