The Cook County Viking volleyball team won its season opener with a thriller of a match at home against the Hilltoppers from Duluth Marshall on September 3.
The Vikings started out a bit slow and the Hilltoppers jumped out to a 7-0 lead. After a timeout called by coach Pam Taylor, the girls came back on the court and started to turn things around.
The Hilltoppers made things difficult for the Vikings as their middle hitter, senior Jaslyn Schilling, seemed to block everything that was hit her way. The Hilltoppers’ junior Tarin Hedquist, an outside hitter, hit some hard spikes at the Vikings. After making some adjustments, the Vikings battled their way back.
Both teams fought to not go down and had some great volleys. TheVikings won game one in a nail-biter, 28-26.
In game two, the Vikings, still pumped up from their exciting win in game one, came out on fire. The Hilltoppers seemed to have gotten a bit tired from their battle in the first game and the Vikings won easily with a score of 25-11.
In game three, the Vikings had some different players on the court and once again started out a little slow. After a few (although it seemed like many) minutes, the Vikings kicked it up. Playing once again with great volleys and a lot of nailbiting excitement, the Vikings beat the Hilltoppers for the third straight game with a score of 25-21, winning the match.
Sophomores Bekah Laky and Ashley Deschampe played great all-around games. Bekah Laky had 6 kills and junior Kristina Rude had 10 set assists.
