Head coach Kelly (Senty) Hausen’s young girls’ basketball team came out of the Two Harbors Holiday Tournament with one win and one loss. The games were played on Dec. 28 and 29 in the Two Harbors high school gymnasium.
Against Denfeld the Vikings led 31-14 at halftime and finished with a 48-32 win over the much larger Duluth high school.
Ariana Poyirier led the Vikings in scoring with 18 points. Sophia Eliasen netted 15, Paisley Smith 4, Emma Gesch 4, Abbie Crawford 3, Maya McHugh 2, and Morgan Starkey finished with 2 points.
“The girls played well against Denfeld, pushing the floor and making great team passes,” coach Kelly Hausen said.
The next day the Vikings were matched against the host school Agates, who they faced for a second time this season.
Against Two Harbors, said coach Hausen, “Sophie had two quick fouls and a third late in the first half. We played poorly, and our intensity was not where we needed it to compete against Two Harbors.”
The Vikings trailed 33-12 at the half and fell 65-26.
Sophia Eliasen led the Vikings with 12 points. Alyssa Spry scored 7, Abbie Crawford 4, Ariana Poyirier 2 and Morgan Starkey chipped in one point.
“Abbie (Crawford) did a phenomenal job keeping their main scorer Tori Bott to 13 points (last game she scored 28 on us),” coach Hausen said. “We will be playing them again this Friday, January, 5 at home at 6:30 p.m.”
Before the next game, the Vikings will be working on their shooting.
“We are also struggling with our field goal percentage, shooting 17 percent from the field,” which, said coach Hausen, makes it difficult to compete. “Most teams aim for about 50 percent from the field,” she said.
