Vikings beat Barnum in thriller 14-12

One of the reasons the Vikings traditionally have a strong defense is because of the coaching by Assistant Coach Mike Boomer. The no-nonsense coach has a passion for the game and the kids he coaches. The Cook County Viking football team evened its record to 1-1 by beating the Barnum Bombers 14-12 at Barnum on Friday, September 9.

Neither team generated much offense in the first half, and the teams went to their locker rooms tied 0-0.

Midway through the third quarter junior quarterback Kale Boomer hooked up with senior wideout Dylan Quaife on a 52-yard touchdown pass. According to Head Coach Mitch Dorr, “Quaife made a big play for our first touchdown. He caught a slant pass and then broke a tackle for a 52-yard touchdown catch.”

The kick failed and the Vikings ended the third quarter up 6-0.

Early in the fourth quarter Barnum’s Jake Plummer darted for a 25-yard score and after the extra point kick failed, the score was knotted at 6-6.

Cook County was forced to punt after the next series. Barnum’s fans and team were electrified by a 75-yard punt return for a touchdown by Brandon King. Again Barnum failed to convert the extra point, but took a 12-6 lead late into the game.

Dylan Quaife was named Viking offensive player of the game for the 52-yard catch-and-run score he made in the third quarter to give the Vikings a 6-0 lead over a tough Barnum Bombers foe.

With their backs against the wall, the Vikings came back to life and marched down the field, scoring a touchdown on a nifty 7-yard run by Colin Everson. The game was decided on a two-point run by Boomer as time wound down. The Vikings won a thriller 14-12 over an always-tough Barnum team.

“Quaife was our offensive player of the game with his big play for our first touchdown,” said Dorr.

The defensive player of the game was Kale Boomer. “He made a switch from defensive back to linebacker. He had close to 20 tackles and a key interception and made numerous big plays in crucial situations,” said Dorr.

“Overall, I was happy that our young guys found a way to win. We had moments where we hurt ourselves and we bounced back to make great plays.

“Colin Everson played an outstanding game at fullback bruising through the line in crucial moments to pick up some key first downs. Peter Warren also played great in his best rushing performance of the season.

“It was a big win on the road in Barnum,” said Dorr.

The Vikings play(ed) Mesabi East at Mesabi on Friday, September 16. Their next home game is against Carlton on Friday, September 30. The games start at 7 p.m.
